Course Description
The striking systematic similarities between Ancient Greek and Sanskrit have fascinated scholars for centuries. The case systems of Greek and Sanskrit can easily be mapped onto one another, and the two languages have more or less the same noun stems/declensions, often with the same formal quirks. The verbal systems either display the categories (such as in tense or voice), or where they do not (such as in the moods), one can again see quite easily what the exact differences are.
GREEK-S 101Â | Ancient Greek for Sanskritists aims to take 12 weeks to offer an overview of Ancient Greek (i.e. Classical Attic) grammar to anyone with some prior ancient-language skills: whether you already know some Sanskrit, some Latin, or have other more general experience with language learning or comparative/Indo-European philology, this course is for you.
This course is directed at adult language learners who are able to understand larger concepts and structures, but who may not be able or willing to memorize large numbers of word forms or vocabulary each week; and thus the regular textbook (see below) will be supplemented by reference materials that will give easily accessible overviews to things such as noun forms, pronouns, verb forms, endings, grammatical categories and concepts etc. Your instructor has nearly 20 years’ experience creating such materials, and has been publishing them since 2017.
To help you with the memorization of everything that, in the long term, it will be good to know actively, there will be plenty of online and printed drills, as well as online flashcards for all noun and verb forms.

Dr. Antonia M. Ruppel
Lecturer in Sanskrit, Greek, and Latin
Antonia Ruppel is a Classicist by training who came to Sanskrit through a series of fortunate accidents. She learnt the language as an autodidact, and one of her reasons for writing her textbook, The Cambridge Introduction to Sanskrit (2017), was to make the experience of studying Sanskrit easier and more pleasant for others. In 2021, she published the follow-up volume, An Introductory Sanskrit Reader: Improving Reading Fluency, designed to help students gain reading fluency in an enjoyable and straightforward way.
Language pedagogy is at the heart of her life. She has been teaching Sanskrit for almost 20 years at universities such as Cornell, Oxford and the LMU in Munich, Germany, as well as offering courses in variety of formats online.
